Comparing Steel Casting and Aluminum Casting

Steel casting and aluminum casting, both of which are part of the metal casting catalog. In modern metal casting, steel and aluminum are two contenders for the top material of choice, as both metals can be used to produce strong, light and corrosion-resistant metal parts and products. QY Precision is dedicated to making different shapes of metal castings, welcome to contact and send us your inquiry with drawings to get quick quotes.

While steel and aluminum have many similarities, they do have a few differences. It is helpful to compare them to find out which is a better alternative.

1. Strength

Steel generally has higher strength than aluminium. Compared to steel, aluminium is also strong but appears inferior. If a product requires a much-higher-strength, steel will be a better choice than aluminium, sometimes even better than iron.

2. Corrosion Resistance

Aluminum, as well as aluminum alloy, is well-known for its excellent corrosion resistance, although it is not when submerged in aqueous environments. Because of this, aluminium is preferred for products used in moist or wet environments. On the other hand, various kinds of steel exhibit varying levels of corrosion resistance. For example, carbon steel can be easy to rust, while stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance. But for the overall conditions, aluminium casting is still an excellent choice for rust-free products.

3. Heat Strength

Aluminum has a much lower melting temperature than steel, so it can be easier to be done during melting and modifying. However, aluminum products are not heat resistant due to such property. On the other hand, if the product is used in a high-heat environment, steel casting will be more recommended.

4. Cost

Depending mainly on the type of casting and the material, the cost varies differently. Generally, aluminum is cheaper than stainless steel, and more expensive than carbon steel. Besides, both steel and aluminum can be recycled, which results in less cost than raw materials. However, both castings can be very expensive, especially when it comes to high-quality alloys. QY Precision has multiple methods for metal casting, and we have ecperienced engineers to analyze which casting has higher cost-effective, welcome to contact and send us your drawings to get quick quotes.

5. Applications

Aluminium castings have been used in the aerospace industry for many years due to their strength, lightweight and furability. Some are also widely used in vehicles and automobile, such as motor housings, engine systems, transmission parts, connectors, phone shell, etc.

Steel castings are often used to make machinery parts and tools that require higher strength and heat resistance. These castings are used frequently in machine parts, forging presses, medical tools, oven parts, marine equipment, etc. Besides, in the construction industry, steel castings are widely used in construction equipment, machines, and components.

Overall

It’s hard to exactly tell which material and what kinds of casting is better, as there is no set of properties that can meet the requirement from many other applications at a time. Therefore, considerations about such manufacture are nesscessary and experienced skills are crucial during the processing.
